Work begins on new Stantonville Veteran’s Memorial

Work recently began on the Stantonville Veteran’s Memorial, to be built northeast of the Stantonville Civic Center and sponsored by the Ruritan club.

Speaking at the regularly scheduled town meeting, Mayor Larry Raines stated that the project next needed a couple more loads of dirt and to pour about three or four more inches of concrete on the slab. Raines also said that the group had received $2,500 in matching funds from Modern Woodmen.

Also present for the meeting were aldermen Ed McDaniel and Larry Russell. The three briefly discussed a freezer in need of repair at the Civic Center.

The group confirmed their monthly fish fry which took place Friday, July 1 from 4 p.m until 7 p.m. Proceeds will go to help with local fire department expenses.

Mayor Raines confirmed he had talked with David Long of Savannah regarding the soon-to-be state mandated financial officer position. Long was agreeable to filling the post if some potential conflict of interest issues can be ironed out.

The board discussed the need to post several “No Loitering” signs on the Civic Center building.

The one hour meeting was then adjourned.
