What is Independence?

According to Webster’s dictionary the word independence means “not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion, conduct, etc.; thinking or acting for oneself, not influenced by the thoughts or actions of others”. I looked this definition up for two reasons; because I have often been told you are just “too independent” and so I could write about Independence Day commonly known as the Fourth of July.
July 4th is a national holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence declaring our independence from Great Britain. Today we celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, parades, barbecues, and family reunions. Americans celebrate being a free nation in a variety of wonderful ways.
How do you plan to celebrate this great freedom? Remember many soldiers helped pay for that freedom with their time and their lives. Independence is a word that should not be taken for granted. If you still live in your own home, you, my friend are blessed. A home is what you make of it, any four walls will do, but it is the people living there that make it a home. If you are able to attend the church of your choice each week, then again, you are blessed. Celebrate the independence you enjoy.
At McNairy County Health Care Center, we have residents that are no longer able to do the things we take for granted. They have had to readjust their lives and the place they call home. Their new home is here with our staff and employees. Some have had to trade the ability to stand and walk for walkers, canes and wheelchairs. Some of them helped pay for the freedom you enjoy on this great holiday. They accept the challenges in their lives and make the most of them. When you see one of our residents I hope you do not see them as a senior citizen but as a bridge from the past to our future.
Remember “where I am today, you someday will be”. Today while you are having a family barbecue, remember all those who have gone before you to pave the way for your freedom. If you have a few minutes, come by McNairy County Health Care Center and thank our residents for the freedom you have today. They will enjoy the visit and you will be blessed.
Until next time.....
