Unsightly yards an issue in Milledgeville
By Andrew Alexander
Milledgeville Mayor Danny Kennedy and Milledgeville Aldermen were met with complaints from community members and business owners about unkempt lawns in the town.
A motion was passed for aldermen to bring in a list of property owners in the Milledgeville city limits with unkempt yards, and that a letter will be written and sent to individuals listed requesting they tend to their yards.
Chuck Meek, Mary Lou Martin, and Crystal White brought complaints to the aldermen and mayor Monday evening at the monthly meeting of the Milledgeville Board of Aldermen suggesting that something be done about people that do not comply with city ordinances that require grass and weeds to be cut after growing more than 12 inches tall.
Board members shared their concerns and agreed the unkempt yards were damaging Milledgeville’s image.
Discussion about the course of action taken for not complying with the letters will begin, if needed, at a later date.
The financial report was read and approved with the general fund balance resting at $43,655.78 and the street fund balance at $22,325.01.
Also noted in the meeting was the success of the barbeque sales at the Jimmy Tuberville Memorial ceremony held in June that raised $1,100 for the Milledgeville Volunteer Fire Department.
Attention was brought to a damaged culvert on Perry Street that was allegedly broken by Adamsville city workers repairing waterlines for Milledgeville.
Mayor Kennedy said that the city of Adamsville had been contacted but there were no plans for the city of Adamsville to tend to the issue.
A motion was then passed for the city of Milledgeville to fix the culvert on their own.
Mayor Kennedy brought up the issue of street sides needing to be mowed, and the aldermen agreed to contact Chester County workers to cut the grass, passing the motion unanimously.
The fire department reported holes in their roof and a heater than needs to be fixed. After some deliberation, a motion for Mayor Kennedy and Alderman Hershel Hollin to repair the leaky roof and dysfunctional heater passed.
