Chase Smith receives the Matthew Graham Memorial award and a scholarship of $1,000 that will be held in trust until he begins college.
George Donaldson presented the award on behalf of the Hendrix Educational Foundation and Graham family at Selmer Middle School on Thursday, May 12.
This award is given in memory of Matthew Graham, an eighth grade student at Selmer Middle School, who was killed by a drunk driver in 1998.
Chase was nominated out of the five county schools by a scholarship committee appointed by the Hendrix foundation.
His characteristics exemplify the life of Matt Graham. He was valedictorian of his class receiving many academic awards, in Beta Club, named Class Favorite in his home room, Mr. S.M.S., and is very active in sports receiving the S.M.S. leadership award in football and basketball. Chase is the son of Darren and Regina L Smith.
