Selmer FCE monthly meeting was conducted June 22 at Gloria and Don Coln’s home with 20 members and guest attending. Gloria and Don hosted the summer gathering for FCE members with a summer luncheon and afterwards the June business was conducted.
Glenda Barron, President called the meeting to order and members recited the club collect. Devotional was given by Gloria Coln on worry. Members unable to attend due to sickness or illness, family and friends of members were announced and will be remembered with cards being sent by May Sue Kirk.
Treasure’s report was given, a $100.00 donation was sent to Salvation Army for area served by McNairy County. Roll call was taken and minutes were dispensed with in the absence of the secretary, Tommye Webb. Club requested that Rita Casey fill in for her until she is able to return and assume her position.
June’s educational program theme was “Patriotic”. Glenda Barron presented the program. Very informative information related to Patriotism was given. August is the only month in the year that does not have a Holiday. June has Flag Day; In 1949 Harry Truman made June 14 a Holiday. Other interesting facts included George Washington is the person who designed the first flag. The national shield was also emphasized with notation of the symbols and meaning of the symbols on the shield. The program also included a closer look into the meaning of the pledge to the flag. Glenda gave each club member a challenge to do better in reciting the pledge to the flag giving emphasis to reciting the phrase “one nation under God” as one phrase rather than two phrases. The program was concluded with listening to a recording of Kate Smith singing “God Bless America”. As Americans we need to honor and show respect to our nation America and the Flag.
Selmer FCE was honored to have Schancey Chapman present for the meeting. Schancey has been hired as FCS Agent for McNairy County. Schancey will be responsible for adult FCS programming in McNairy County which includes being advisor agent for the FCE program. She will assume program responsibilities on July 1, 2011. We welcome Schancey and look forward to having her.
Diane Uher, McNairy County Council President gave registration information to members concerning Regional FCE Mini Conference “Reach New Heights with Team FCE” on July 27 in Jackson. Registration is $12.00 per person which includes lunch. The day activity will include: business meeting, basket auction, cultural arts competition and viewing, fashion revue, and creative writing winner announcement. All winners in regional events will advance to state in November. The meeting should conclude by 2:30. Members who are interested in attending should have their registration submitted to Extension Office on or before July 8 to meet the regional registration deadline. McNairy County will have a mini bus driven by Don Coln to provide transportation to this event. The bus will leave the Extension Office on July 27 at 8:00 a.m.
With the Regional FCE Mini Conference being conducted on July 27 and this being the day of the regular monthly FCE meeting the club chose to cancel the local meeting and members can attend the Regional FCE Mini Conference. Selmer FCE chose to donate school supplies as one of their goals in January. July is the month that these supplies are to be collected for donation. Members are asked to bring school supplies they would like to donate to the Extension Office on or before July 27. Schancey will get donated items to the location on August 6 for distribution.
The last quilt has been constructed using the quilt blocks constructed by FCE members during the quilt block challenge activity. This quilt is the spring quilt and was shown at the meeting today. The quilt top has 56 blocks that have been designed to make the top. Members are taking donations for tickets 1 ticket $1.00 or 6 tickets for $5.00. The quilt winner will be drawn from tickets sold at the August FCE County Wide Meeting at Stantonville on August 3. The county wide meeting is a potluck luncheon of all interested FCE members in McNairy County hosted by the Stantonville FCE members.
Upcoming events of interest to members were announced: Volunteers are needed to assist with the Food Bank give a way on June 23 in Adamsville anyone who can assist needs to be at the Garan building by 8:00 a.m. McNairy County FCE County Council meeting is June 28 in the Extension Office at 2:00 p.m. County Council members are expected to attend, any FCE member is welcome to attend. Summer Celebration and Garden Show is July 14 at the West Tennessee Research Center on Airways Blvd in Jackson, admission is $5.00 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Selmer FCE meeting was concluded with members standing and reciting the American Pledge.
