Selmer celebrates Parks and Recreation Month

The Selmer Parks and Recreation Department began its celebration of Parks and Recreation Month with the Freedom Festival on July 4.

The department is also getting ready for fall sports, according to Selmer Parks and Recreation Director Sybil Dancer.

The department will be offering competition in softball, baseball and basketball.

They are also preparing for the Broomcorn Festival in October, Halloween and Veterans Day in November.

In December, the department will be involved in the Breakfast with Santa at the Carl Perkins Center in Jackson.

Selmer Parks and Recreation recently purchased a sound system for musical and other events.

This equipment includes microphones, a mixer, a music deck and speakers.

Parks and Recreation Month began in 1985 and is sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association.

The theme this year is “Rock Your Park.”

“According to recent studies, about one-third of Americans struggle with inactivity, obesity and associated health challenges. Now is the time for change. Through Parks and Recreation Month, we’re encouraging Americans to get out, get active and get healthy. By signing our Five in July Park Pledge, citizens can become a real part of the movement toward wellness,” said NRPA CEO Barbara Tuliplane.

In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an official resolution for Parks and Recreation Month.

The NRPA is promoting the Presidential Active Lifestyle initiative called Let’s Move.

The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award can be earned by taking part in 60 minutes of physical activity for kids (30 minutes for adults) five days a week for six weeks.
