School board options property for Selmer Elemetary

The McNairy County Board of Education authorized taking an option and surveying and civil engineering work  on the Falcon Road site for the proposed new Selmer Elementary School.

The vote was 5-1 with board members Tony Chapman, Jean Jones, Lynn Baker, Frank Lacey and Jarrell Stanfield voting yes and board chairman Larry Smith voting no.

Smith said he favored the Highway 64/45 site.

The board authorized spending $1,000 on a 60-day option to buy the property as well as expenditures of $6,400 for a survey and $15,000 for civil engineering.

This site was the choice of 69 percent of respondents to a survey distributed at a special called meeting of the school board in June.

The board called the special meeting after project manager Pat English told the board in May that the low bid for dirt work on the Highway 64/45 site was nearly $900,000.

In other actions the board:

*accepted a $21,153 bid by Better Source to supply paper.

*approved policies on grading and interscholastic athletics on second reading.

*approved the first pay raise for bus drivers in five years.

*approved the school nutrition bid by Interstate Brands.

*approved holding the Annual Sportsman’s Banquet at McNairy Central High School. Board Attorney Ross Mitchell said it would be legal to allow a gun or knife show on school property as long as local law enforcement personnel were notified.

*accepted the furniture bid of School Equipment Co.
