Redbirds fly past Tigers in Schools Out Spectacular
The Adamsville Redbirds played host to Middleton Friday as pool play continued at Cardinal Field in the Schools Out Spectacular baseball tournament.
Adamsville broke open a close game late in the contest to claim an 8-3 victory.
The Redbirds got strong pitching from starter Drew Griswell and reliever Wesley Stricklin and good defense and timely hitting from their teammates in picking up the win.
Middleton picked up a first inning tally on a couple of hits dropped in. Adamsville came back in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 1 after a short fly ball to right by Josh Burks fell in, giving him a two-out RBI.
After Middleton failed to score in the top of the second, Adamsville took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning after the Tigers were guilty of a two-out throwing error.
Griswell retired the Tigers in order in the top of the third inning, with Redbird third baseman Logan Young making two very nice plays in the inning.
After Adamsville was held scoreless in the bottom of the third, Middleton tied the contest in the fourth on a long drive over the left fielder’s head that went all the way to the wall, and took the lead, 3-2, on an infield ground out.
The Redbirds retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on a walk, a base hit by Trevor Griffin and a two-run single by Cody Fair.
Wesley Stricklin took over on the mound for the Redbirds in the top of the fifth, trying to hold on to the team’s 4-3 advantage. Stricklin looked very impressive as he struck out all three batters in the inning.
Adamsville threatened in the bottom of the inning with a walk and a single, but were unable to push any runs across.
Stricklin looked good again in the top of the sixth as he coaxed three ground outs from Tiger hitters working around a walk.
Adamsville used a couple of walks and three hits to put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth before the time limit for the game ran out, giving Adamsville the 8-3 win.
The win clinched a spot in the tourney championship game for the Redbirds.
Drew Griswell picked up the win on the mound for Adamsville.
