The 2011 Dixie Boys World Series held in Beaufort, South Carolina opened on Saturday with the local Ramer All Stars representing the state of Tennessee against Brunswick County, North Carolina.
On field one of Burton Wells Park, Tennessee lost the first game 18-1, but the loss really didn’t cause any concern back home. The Ramer All Stars came out of the loser’s bracket to win state against Madison Central, beating them twice.
“They are winners,” said Coach Tracy Northcutt. “They are state champs and no one can take that away from them.”
Sunday marked day two of the tournament. Tennessee took their final battle on field two against West Seminole, Florida with a heartbreaking loss of 11-1.
“We knew Florida and these other teams were going to be tough,” said Northcutt. “This is what they do.”
The coach did not seem upset over the losses at the World Series, but at the thought of losing a really great team.
This day not only marked the last day of the tournament, but of a four year family relationship within the group. The boys were like brothers and the parents and coaches looked after all the kids, not just their own. It was like a big family.
“This is a close group of people,” said Northcutt. “The memories are not all about playing ball. They are going to cherish everything that was outside of baseball too.”
The group made the best of their time spent in South Carolina, on the field, in the dugout, and off the field.
“They enjoyed themselves,” said Northcutt. “They have cut-up, popped each other with towels, and really had a good time.”
The road game was close enough to the beach for a mini-vacation retreat and some relaxation after the estimated 600 mile one-way destination.
The 14-year-old Ramer All Stars end their Dixie Youth journey as the boys grow older and move up onto the high school level.
“Hopefully, they will take with them what me and Van have coached,” said Northcutt. “They all hold a special place in my heart.”
