Jacob Prather, of Ramer, has had diabetes since he was a child, but rather than slowing him down, it has motivated him to take a 62-mile ride to raise money for diabetes research.

On Apr. 30, he will participate in the “Ride of his Life” in the Tour de Cure in Memphis. He is doing this to raise awareness and money for research to find a cure for diabetes.

As a “Rider with Diabetes,” Prather will be recognized as a Red Rider.

The 19-year-old was first diagnosed with Type I diabetes when he was six.

Because he has this disease, Prather has to take insulin with every meal and wear an insulin pump.

“Being active is kind of hard sometimes, but it does help my diabetes in the long run. It keeps me in shape and helps my blood sugar stay more level. I just have to keep a closer look on it than regular people,” he said.

Prather has ridden with his father,  J. P. Prather, who lives in Union City, and his team, the Northwest Tennessee Cyclists, but this is the first ride of this type he has been in.

The elder Prather has participated in the Memphis ride for the past few years.

Jacob Prather trained for the ride with a lot of strength training and spent a lot of time on the treadmill, as well as riding a lot.

“I just tried to get my lungs in shape, and everything else,” he said.

“I’m just really ready to get out there and ride,” Prather said.

A fundraiser held Friday at Eastview raised $1,700 of his goal of $2,400.

Emily Crabb, Jacob’s mother, organized the event.

There was a dinner, cake walk and auction, with County Mayor Jai Templeton serving as auctioneer.

Local businesses donated items for the auction.

A well-known local cook, Danny Joe  Montgomery, cooked the barbecue. His brother Jeff and nephew Ryan both have Type I diabetes.
