McNairy Summer Softball
On Tuesday, June 7, Summer League Softball kicked off at McNairy Central with two Lady Bobcat wins.
“This is a fun league,” said Coach Mellanie Surratt. “We just come to play the game we love.”
“Some nights we have players in their comfortable positions and some nights players play in positions they have not played before.”
“This helps players understand the game and learn the importance of thinking ahead before the ball is hit.”
The night began with a victory over Scotts Hill 6-1 and later finished with a shutout game against Hardin County 9-0.
Soon-to-be freshmen softball players took the field for the first time as Lady Bobcats.
From Selmer Middle and Michie Elementary schools came rookies Laralee Williams, Kelly Beth Ernest, and Lily Nixon who began the lineup for McNairy.
Ernest led the team in pitching, holding Scotts Hill to zero runs for the first two innings.
Morgan Williams got the ball rolling in the top of the second with a base hit and was brought home off a double by Madison Jobe.
Jobe stole third and Kelly Moore was walked with a pitch that hit her in the head, luckily a helmet was there for protection.
Macayla Holley and L. Williams brought Jobe and Kelly home with base hits that set the score at 3-0.
Nixon came in with a strong bat in the top of the third hitting a triple and was later brought home with a base hit from Addison King. King came in with a hit from Macee Taylor.
Scotts Hill made their first run of the game in the bottom of the third. The scoreboard read 5-1 and remained the same through the scoreless fourth inning.
Macayla Holley batted in Taylor to end the ballgame in the top of the fifth 6-1 because of the hour and 15 minute time limit.
Hardin County then came in to play a double header with Scotts Hill and then McNairy.
Jobe pitched the no-run game against Hardin.
Williams, Ernest, and Nixon were walked in the first inning by the Hardin County pitcher.
With the bases loaded, M. Williams began to bring the runners home.
M. Williams finished out the set of runs with a double by Taylor that gave a score of 4-0 McNairy.
L. Williams and Ernest made two back-to-back hits to left field that earned them a spot on base.
The second ended at 6-0 after Nixon brought the runners home.
With time ticking, the third ended scoreless and quick.
L. Williams, Ernest, and King gave the Lady Bobcats three more additional runs in the fourth to conclude 9-0. McNairy Central has summer league games scheduled through June 20. The upcoming matches against South Side and Scotts Hill will be held at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 16 at MCHS.
