Monday, June 20 concluded McNairy Central Lady Bobcat’s summer softball league with a double header against Chester County.
McNairy lost 9-0 and then again 4-2 against the Lady Eagles. The Lady Cats were undefeated up until this final day.
“The turnout was higher this year than last year and more teams showed up,” said Coach Mellanie Surratt.
“The young players fit really well on the team and the older players have made progress.”
Coach Surratt thanked everyone that gave their support, time, and effort in making the summer league successful.
“Modern Woodman deserves special thanks for their charitable donation, which matched what we raised. That was a big help.”
Chester picked up a base-hit in the top of the first and the runner stole bases to bring in the first run.
McNairy held a strong defense with an out a first by Lynum, a pop-up caught in left field by Sarah Stanfield, and a grounder snatched up by Laralee Williams and a toss to third baseman Kelly Beth Ernest to send the game into the second 1-0.
Two quick outs in the bottom set up Khaila Lynum, who knocked a pop-up between center and left field for a double.
Pitcher Allison Dillon hit a line drive just past second. Chester quickly in fielded the ball and caught Lynum between third and home for the third out.
In the top of the second a hit to the wall gave Chester’s speedy runner an infield homerun. A second run was made before McNairy could get the 1-2-3.
Morgan Williams stepped up to the plate and slammed a line drive right past the pitcher and second baseman for a base hit. Williams stole bases to get just short of home, ending the second 3-0 Chester.
The third gave Chester a run off a hit that was played as fair ball but was scoreless for the Lady Bobcats.
Chester pulled a strong bat in the fourth and brought in a total of five runs. Dillon caught a pop-up, an out at first, and another pop-up caught by second baseman Haven Phelps sent the game into the bottom 9-0 Chester.
Dillon took a hit to the ribs that put a sour look on everyone’s face, but she took her base. Unfortunately, base runner Dillon didn’t make it around the diamond.
The scoreboard read 9-0 as the umpire called the game on time limit after a scoreless fifth inning.
The second game against Chester switched the top and bottoms half to McNairy batting first and Chester hitting last.
Lynum was walked and left on in the first after three outs, but McNairy held the Lady Eagles to zero with three hasty out of their own.
Laralee at shortstop sped to catch foul ball just outside of third base for the first out. Then pitcher Kelly Beth Ernest reached out to catch a speedy line drive and a pop-up was caught by Lynum at first.
Dillon hit a double and was sent around for the first run on a walk from Ernest and a base hit from Williams. McNairy came out with the lead and going into the bottom of the second 1-0.
Williams caught a pop-up and a runner at second for two easy outs. With two runners on and two outs Ernest threw a strikeout.
The third inning left no runs for McNairy. But with a pop-up caught by Laralee, an out at first, and a foul ball caught by catcher Jacey Whirley, the Lady Cats held Chester to one run in the bottom.
With one out Ernest made a perfect slap hit that sent her to first. Laralee hit a double rounding Ernest to third and Stanfield was walked, which gave McNairy the lead of 2-1.
Two outs later the game moved on to the bottom of the fourth. Ernest threw a strikeout. She hit the next hitter with a pitch to the head, but the runner made the trip around for the tying run.
Ernest gave another strike-out. The Lady Eagles get two more runs for the lead. Lynum caught a third out at first.
As time ran out, the game went into the fifth. Chester made three consecutive outs at first to end the ball game at 4-2.
The hot summer days end for the Lady Bobcats with a summer record of 4-2. McNairy will not take the field again until next season in February 2012.
