Summer has already started for the students of McNairy County, but they aren’t putting down the books just yet. This June, the Irving Meek Jr. Public Library of Adamsville and the Jack McConnico Memorial Library of Selmer plan to once again offer summer reading programs to kids of all ages.
“We want to encourage children and teens to read during the summer,” said Irving Meek Jr. Public Library director Marsha Jernigan.
“The library is always open to them. Through our summer reading program we are trying to emphasize that we are the little library with the big heart.”
Both libraries have annual summer reading programs that reward students from all over the county for reading. In compliance with Tennessee State Library and Archives’ statewide summer reading program, this year’s theme is “One World, Many Stories.”
On Friday mornings throughout the month of June, the libraries will host events with entertainment, such as magicians and puppet shows, and have free snacks for their summer readers.
The Irving Meek Jr. Public Library in Adamsville will begin their weekly events at 10 a.m. They will be open to children from kindergarten through high school.
The Jack McConnico Memorial Library in Selmer will begin events at 10:30 a.m. that will be open to all children under the age of 12.
Library directors are expecting around 40 students to participate in the program at each library.
Directors will award a prize at the final meeting on June 24 to the student from each library who reads the most.
“I want to thank the library board and the library staffs and sponsors for making the program possible,” said director of the Jack McConnico Memorial Library Norma Humphries.
Humphries attended a workshop presented by Tennessee State Library and Archives to prepare for the summer reading program.
