Kennedy becomes volleyball standout

Emily Kennedy

A new volleyball season approaches for McNairy Central and the girls practice and strive to build a team that will hold up as well as the team did last year when they finished second in the district.

Pulling through for the team this year is 17-year-old senior athlete Emily Kennedy of Selmer, Tenn.

Coach Crystal Slaughter chose Kennedy to receive the spotlight for all her hard work in efforts in trying to build the team after a loss of four key seniors last year: Ashley Bruno, Robin Matlock, Macaria Surratt, and Adrianne Gafford.

“Every day she continues to improve on becoming a great hitter and passer,” said Slaughter.

Emily’s stats as of last year include 150 service points, 42 aces, and 56 digs.

“I am proud of myself,” said Kennedy, “because I earned a starting position on varsity last year,0 and I hope I can keep that this year.”

The reason for her advancement is clear. Kennedy is dedicated, enthusiastic, and modest. Any question that pertained to her accomplishments, Kennedy would answer with a kind quote about someone else.

“I really like Coach Slaughter,” said Kennedy. “She wants us to do good. She works hard and is good at her job.”

Kennedy cherishes the teammates and friends that have traveled along with her during her four years in volleyball.

“I have played with Tierra Lusk, Callie Horton, and Rachel Burns all four years,” said Kennedy. “I feel like we have gotten close and that this will be a good year for us.”

Parents, David and Donna Kennedy are proud of Emily for not only her athletic accomplishments but also for her academic performance.

“Emily did a great job last season taking over the outside hitter role after losing two senior outside hitters,” said Slaughter.  “Her serving helped us to many wins last season. We will need her help as a senior leader, a varsity hitter, and a great server to accomplish what we did last year.”
