| By RUSSELL INGLE Staff Writer Those that have been hoping for a quick glimpse of Mary Winkler or a seat in the court room at the McNairy County Justice Complex when the much anticipated murder trial begins, may have gotten their wish granted without ever leaving the comfort of their home. According to a source within the Tennessee Administrative Office of the Courts, the entire trial, minus the jury selection, will be broadcast live on the Courtroom Television Network, more commonly known as Court TV, each day from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Home to former prosecutor Nancy Grace and day-time talk show host Star Jones, Court TV promises to cover the event from gavel to gavel. Known for its live court room broadcasts, Court TV recently debuted the weekly series “Till Death Do Us Part”, a dark comedy based on failed marriages that end in murder. Defense attorneys for Mary Winkler have given prosecutors the names of three experts on issues of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. In court papers, Winkler’s attorneys said their expert-witness list will include forensic psychologist Lynne Zager of Memphis, forensic psychiatrist Stephen Montgomery of Vanderbilt University in Nashville and psychologist and author Jeanne King, who has been a consulting expert in criminal and civil trials involving domestic violence. While she has been found competent to stand trial, Winkler’s attorneys have indicated they may present a mental defense such as “diminished capacity” in which they might argue that she lacked the required state of mind to commit premeditated first-degree murder. Winkler is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her husband last March. If convicted as charged, Winkler could be sentenced to life in prison with parole possible after 51 years. Jury selection is scheduled to begin April 9. |
