Lydia Hickman and Shelby Kennedy represented the McNairy Central Lady Bobcats in the TSSAA Region 8 and the District 14 Tournament held in Jackson at Conger Park on Monday.

The duo won second in the Region in girls’ doubles.

“I am proud of them,” said Coach Steve Hickman. “They are the first girls to make it this far in the years I have been a coach. In 2008, Steven Whittaker and Wes Rhodes made it this far, but no one else has come close.”

Hickman and Kennedy received a bye in the first round and then they defeated Sacred Heart in the second round.

They earned two additional wins in matches against Adamsville and Madison in the quarter finals.

In the finals against Trinity Christian Academy, McNairy lost 6-1 twice, but moved on to compete in the Region 8 Tournament.

The team won 6-1 and 6-5 over Kingsbury out of Memphis and then was put out by their previous nemesis, Trinity Christian Academy.

In the first days of the districts, Abby Brown lost in the first round to South Side’s top player in singles and Mallorie Sweat lost in the first round to Lexington’s top girl.

Lance Carroll won over South Side and then lost to Chester County. Austin McCarter won over Adamsville and then lost to Bolivar in the second round.

In doubles, Taylor Scott and Emily Harris won over Lexington in the first round and won again over South Side. In the quarter finals they lost to the top seeded, Trinity Christian Academy.

Austin Buck and Jonathan Jones lost in the first round to Madison Academic in the boys’ doubles.

Unfortunately, only the winner of the region finals advanced to state. Lady Bobcats Hickman and Kennedy finished the tennis season on a cold and windy Monday in May.
