Foote among scholar-athletes

LEBANON – Five Cumberland golfers were named TranSouth Conference Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the conference office last week in advance of the league tournament, which started Monday in Blytheville, Ark.

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically and maintain a 3.00 grade-point-average or above through the Fall 2010 semester.

Golfers Sarah Beth Foote, a Selmer native; Dustin Thomas; Paul Vaughan; Allyson Agee; and K.C. McGinley were all honored.

Foote recently posted an opening-round 84 and was third after the first day of the Union University Spring Invitational at Wingfoot Golf Club in Union City.

Foote was just one shot off her career-best round at Cumberland on the par-72, 5,861-yard course. She finished in seventh place after posting an 89 in the second round, and teammates Allyson Agee and Lindsey Taylor both scored 82, helping Cumberland erase the three-shot deficit and win the Invitational.

The Bulldogs had four players finish in the Top 10.

The TranSouth recognized 34 total golfers, 14 women from five schools (Bethel University, Lyon College, Trevecca Nazarene, Martin Methodist and Cumberland) and 20 men from seven institutions (Bethel, Lyon, Trevecca, Martin Methodist, Cumberland, Union University and Blue Mountain).
