Fall sports kickoff for McNairy County

County junior high football teams have begun practice and are preparing for the start of the season with an annual Junior High Jamboree, which will be held  Aug. 22 at McNairy Central High School.

Michie will host a preseason game against St. Mary’s of Jackson, Tenn. next Thursday at 6 p.m.

Selmer will scrimmage on Thursday against Lexington and Henderson North, Monday at Alcorn Junior High, and then again next Thursday at Pickwick Southside for the junior varsity players.

Not only football has kicked off in August, but golf went into full swing late July with a tournament in Lawrence County where the McNairy Central Bobcats placed third out of 10 teams with an overall score of 311.

McNairy was scheduled to play a match last Tuesday after press time against Chester and Bolivar in Chickasaw. Be sure to read the results in next week’s copy of the Independent Appeal.

Adamsville’s first golf match against Madison and Jackson Central Merry last Monday was cancelled due to heat and thunderstorm warnings in McNairy County. The Cardinals will resume play on Thursday with a match on the road against Riverside.

Girls’ soccer was scheduled to begin last Tuesday with a scrimmage against local rivals, McNairy Central and Adamsville, but the scrimmage was rescheduled for Thursday night.

McNairy Central Volleyball will venture to Freed Hardeman University for their annual preseason play day next Saturday.

The four local junior high softball teams, Bethel Springs, Ramer, Michie, and Selmer will hold their annual Play Day on Saturday at the North Park in Selmer, Tenn. beginning at 8 a.m.
