Extreme Experience gets extreme results

The Extreme Experience children’s bible school concluded its week long event July 15 at Selmer City Park. This non-denominational event was sponsored by Freedom Ministries who brought it to McNairy County from Jacksonville, Fla.

The outdoor event included games, crafts, bible lessons, singing, dancing, and worship for area children 6-16 years old.  In addition the standard VBS fare, the Extreme Experience offered children a glimpse at something they are unlikely to see anywhere else, an 11-year-old preacher.

Christian Spencer, who said he has been preaching to his family since he was five, was on hand to assist the event’s coordinator and lead children’s minister Casana D. Griffin.

“I’ve been doing this since I was young,” Spencer said. “I started preaching in my church when I was eight.”

Spencer said that his age was a help not a hindrance to reaching other children. “At first (the children) thought it was kind of weird, but by the end of the week they didn’t care about my age.”

Griffin seemed unphased at having a half-pint preacher to assist with her mission and said that she felt the event went over very well with the community.

“Children need to feel safe to praise the Lord,” Griffin said. “We made them feel comfortable to do what they had to do.”

Griffin said that she was pleased with the turnout for the event which saw an increase in enrollment each day throughout the week. She said that even the warm weather with heat index readings approaching 110 degrees for most of the week did not deter the children.

“It’s been great every day,” Griffin said. “We haven’t even noticed the heat.”

While this was the first time The Extreme Experience event has visited the Selmer City Park, it’s not the first time the Freedom Ministries team has visited McNairy County.

The team has conducted other ministry work in the area in the past and was also holding an event for adults last week, the
Intensive Freedom Ministry Level One Seminar at the City of Refuge Church. For more information about Freedom Ministries or its mission call (731) 645-8360.
