The McNairy County Fair will be held July 5-9 this year at the Fairgrounds in Selmer, according to Stephen Berryman, Chairman of the Board of the McNairy County Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees).
The fair will be staged by Dixieland Carnival Company.
“I’d just like everybody to come out and support the fair this year,” Berryman said. “The support we got last year helped us to contribute to the Christmas Shopping Spree, as well as help 40 families at Thanksgiving time. There are a lot of families, even though the economy is getting better, we are still trying to climb out of a recession, and I feel we will have as many families or more to help this year.”
Admission is $2 and unlimited ride armbands will be available for $18. Proceeds from this year’s fair will go to the same causes they went to last year, he said.
About 10 or 20 additional families were helped beyond the shopping spree last year for light bills, gas bills and other things, Berryman said.
Last year, about $1,500 from the fair went to the Christmas shopping spree, $600 for Thanksgiving and $850 for other needy families at Christmas.
Proceeds from the fair also help pay for permits and other expenses in putting on the Christmas parade.
“Everything we get from the fair goes right back into the community, except for expenses. Everybody wonders why we are constantly doing fundraising. Even though we are a nonprofit, we still have a light bill, water bill and taxes just like everybody else” he said.
This is a small part of the proceeds from the fair, Berryman said. In addition, he said the Jaycees spend “thousands of dollars” in expenses for fair events.
