County Fair rolls into Selmer next week

The McNairy County Fair is set to begin July 5 and run through July 9 at the Selmer City Fair Grounds on High School Road.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday and 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The gate cost will be $2 and armbands will be $18.00 a piece with all proceeds going towards a Christmas shopping spree, Thanksgiving feasts, and other holiday related donations for families in need during the 2011 holiday season.

The Dixieland Carnival Company will provide rides and entertainment for families looking for fun.

 Tuesday, July 5 there will be a womanless beauty review that will begin at 7 p.m. and contestants will need to arrive at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, July 6 gospel bands Forgiven and Higher Praise will perform with the first band beginning at 7 p.m. 

Thursday, July 7 there will be a 4X4 truck pull that will be open to anyone with a 4X4 truck that is willing to compete. The competition will begin at 7 p.m. and event coordinators suggest competitors arrive at 6 p.m. to begin registering their vehicles.

Friday, July 8 the TDWA will put on a wrestling show beginning at 8 p.m.

Saturday, July 9 there will be a demolition derby beginning at 7 p.m. Contestants are asked to have their vehicles for the competition registered between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. so they may be inspected for eligibility.

The McNairy County Fair will also showcase local home goods like jams, jellies, cookies, cakes, pies, canned goods,  quilts, needlepoint, crochet, and a special homemade ice cream contest.

Those planning on competing in the canned goods, jams, jellies, quilts, needlepoint, and crochet competitions must have items entered at the Selmer Jaycee Building no later than July 2 at 6 p.m. Cakes, cookies, pies must be entered at the Jaycee Building by July 8 at 6 p.m.

The homemade ice cream competition will be held Saturday, July 9 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and contestants must have their products turned into the Selmer Jaycee Building by 4:45 p.m. 

Any vendors interested in setting up a booth in the Jaycee Building during the fair need to contact Steve Berryman at (731) 610-6970.

Also, the 2011 Fairest of the Fair Pageant will be held on Saturday, July 2 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Selmer Jaycee Building on High School Road, and the entry fee is $25.

Girls ages 0 months to 21 years, and married women 18 years and older are eligible for the competition, and will be judged on personality, appearance, and poise. Applications will be accepted up to the day of the pageant.

The winner of the 16-20 year old category will represent McNairy County in the State Fairest of the Fair pageant held in Nashville in January of 2012.
