“All you have to do is love to play and show up,” stated Ronnie Brooks, McNairy County Circuit Court Clerk and Director of the Community Band. Over twenty performed Saturday at the new Farmers Market Pavillion in Selmer.

The audience enjoyed the Battle Hymn of Republic, Normandy Beach March and the Armed Forces Salute just to name a few.

A community band started about five years ago when Arts in McNairy founder Shawn Pitts approached Brooks and asked him if he would be interested building a community band.

“We started out with about five or six persons and have grown to over 30 today,” said Brooks.

Brooks has over 25 years of experience teaching and directing bands. His experience began at Northside Junior High in Jackson in 1978 where he moved on to serve as high school director just prior to serving as director at McNairy Central from 84-97 and then as assistant director for Adamsville High School for a couple of years. He ended his music career at Southside High School in Jackson before running for office.

Teaching and directing music is a passion of Brooks, which is shared by many, young and old, who continue to enjoy performing. The band has three performances a year on average and practice six weeks prior to performances on Tuesday evenings at the Selmer Middle School.

“If you have a horn, even if you haven’t played for forty years, you are welcome to play with us,” said Brooks. “We have members ranging from junior high students to retirees representing several counties and states.”

Adamsville High School Band Director Frankie Congiardo serves as drummer in the band.

The band has a website: www.aimcommunityband.com  for more information.

“Just show up and play. We welcome all who love to play music,” Brooks said.
