Cheer cats receive awards

The award-winning McNairy Central football cheerleaders are ready for the Friday night lights. They have been preparing to take the field since March following cheer try-outs with summer camp, practices, and pee wee clinics. This summer they attended The University of Memphis where UCA sponsored a cheer camp.

In a demanding week, the 16 football cheerleaders were introduced to new stunts, dances, cheers, and chants. Throughout the week, the girls were awarded all blue ribbons and a spirit stick each night for their continued great attitudes and leadership roles at the camp.

This year, on the final day, the MCHS football cheerleaders competed against squads of 20 plus from Memphis and Alabama to bring home two 2nd place trophies in both the Extreme Routine competition and Cheer competition. In addition, the squad was also awarded an Overall Superior trophy. Seniors, Brittney Kirk and Christina Carroll were honored as “All American” cheerleaders, and senior Shelbie Fowler was recognized with the UCA “pin it forward” program.

The most thrilling moment of the awards ceremony was when the football cheerleaders were granted the Leadership Award. This is a new award given by the UCA staff which recognizes the one squad at camp that continually portrays excellent leadership and helpful attitudes to other squads throughout the week. The UCA staff head cheerleader commented, “This squad was the first to enter the gym in the mornings and the last to leave at night. They were always willing to help younger squads and were respectful to the staff. These girls exemplify leadership.” The football cheer coach is Michelle K. Teague.

Come out and join these talented young ladies as they support our “boys of fall” with the first home game this Friday night. Go Bobcats.
