In dramatic fashion, the Junior Cardinals of Adamsville stole a win away from the Michie Blue Devils late in their game last Thursday, picking up one-point victory, 26-25.

“It was a good game. We were excited that we were, at least, in it until the last eight seconds,” said Michie Head Coach Michael Cleary. “We played lots better than we have, but the bottom line is we were up 24-19 and we fouled our way out of the game...they beat us at the free-throw line. Congratulations to Adamsville.”

After hitting back-to-back 3-pointers, the Blue Devils led 24-19 with a little over two minutes remaining in the contest. The Cardinals cut the lead to two, got a jump ball call under the basket with the possession arrow pointing in their favor after the Michie inbound and then called a timeout.

Adamsville’s Tyler Luna drove the lane and drew a foul that sent him to the free-throw line with the Cardinals down 24-22. Luna sank the first free throw but missed the second attempt. Drayton Barnes pulled down the rebound but not before being fouled. Barnes hit his first free throw, tying the game at 24 all, but missed the second.

Michie’s Jarrett Mask was fouled trying to grab the board, which sent him to the line for two with the Blue Devils in the double bonus. With only eight second left on the clock, Mask made his first free throw but missed the second, giving his team a one-point advantage.

Cardinal Head Coach, Will Barkley, called a quick timeout to draw up a play for his team. Adamsville inbounded the ball to James McDonald, who turned and banked in a shot from the block to give Adamsville the slight 26-25 edge with only three seconds remaining.

Michie sprinted down the court, looking for an open shot to win the game, but could not get one off before time expired, and the Cardinals celebrated their second win of the season.

“This was another exciting game that came down to the last possession, and one again we were fortunate to come out on top,” said Barkley. “It's a great way to start the new year, and hopefully this will build our confidence going forward.”

The win improved the Cardinals’ record to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in county play. Adamsville was scheduled to host Reagan South Side last Monday, but that game was cancelled. They will travel to Hardin County Thursday to take on the Tigers.

With the loss, the Blue Devils dropped to 0-12 overall and 0-6 in county play. Michie turned around Monday and hosted Jackson St. Mary’s, trying to shake off the tough loss.
